Quick and Easy Crafts: Tween Hair Tie Rack

k. ferguson
Do you have a tween girl that loves collecting hair ties or bracelets? Are you tired of finding them all over the house or bathroom sink? Looking for an inexpensive way to house them, which still allows her to retain her individuality?

This project is great for any budding artist or fashionista. The supplies are minimal, but the ideas are endless. The rack in the above photo was originally made as a key rack, but was later used as a hair tie, bracelet and necklace holder. It can be used for anything lightweight and placed almost anywhere.

Supplies:
1 unfinished small rack
Cobalt blue acrylic paint
Small sponge brush
High gloss spray varnish
Paper plate
Paper towels

This project is great for any skill level and age group.

The unfinished rack can be purchased at Michael's Craft Store for usually less than $5.00. The rack will either come with the pegs already in place, or you place them after painting. It doesn't matter which you purchase.

Take your blue paint and the sponge brush and apply two even coats, waiting for each coat to dry evenly prior to applying the next. When the second coat is dry, apply your varnish. Spray varnish is fine, but make sure to turn the project as you spray to ensure even application.

Using one color is fine, but there are many ways to really make this project unique. You can use painter's tape and use more than one color. If you would like to do that, apply the lighter color first, wait for it to dry, and then apply the tape. It is always easier to paint over a lighter color than a darker color.

Another way to make this project unique is to crackle it. To crackle this project, try Crackle Painting Made Easy.

To finish this project, you will want to add saw tooth picture hangers to the back of the frame. Use the smallest size and use care when hammering the nails. The wood is very thin and you not want the nail to come through the wood and ruin your new project.

The ideas for this hair tie rack are endless. Many of these tiny racks have the center cut out, like the one in this project. This is a great place to show off the latest teen heartthrob or tween crush. Use your imagination and have fun!

That looks like a really nice project that I need to have my dd do, as she is always losing her hair tie's.

Great Idea! I bet you could even make a boy version to hang baseball caps on by using favorite team colors. Wonderful article.
