Quick and Easy Ways Add Flavor to Tasteless Green Beans

Kassidy Emmerson
At the end of the growing season this year, a neighbor kindly gave me a peck of fresh green beans. I immediately froze them to keep the flavor in. I imagined how good they would taste this winter. When I heated up a quart of them today, they were tendercrisp and rich green in color. The green beans looked delicious, like they had just been picked from the garden. The problem was, they were tasteless. We love green beans so much that we usually eat them plain. But not so with these. Read this informative article and find out some quick and easy ways add flavor to tasteless green beans.

Sprinkle In Some Bacon Bits and Add Cooked, Chopped Onions
I was in a hurry to serve the green beans, so I couldn't do anything real fancy. Too bad there weren't any leftover strips of bacon from breakfast in the refrigerator. I could have broken them up into small pieces and added taste to the green beans. So, I did the next best thing and used bacon bits. I chopped up an onion and cooked it in the microwave a few minutes, then stirred that into the green beans. Delicious!

Add Butter and Herbs
Another quick and easy way to add flavor to tasteless green beans is to melt a teaspoon or two- depending on how many beans you have and how buttery you like them- in the microwave. Add some fresh or dried rosemary, basil and parsley into the butter. Then, stir the butter mixture into the green beans.

Borrow Flavor From Other Vegetables
Tasteless green beans can be turned into a succulent side dish if you mix them with other vegetables as well. Practically any vegetable would taste good in combination with green beans. I've used the vegetables we like the most including cooked broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, whole kernel corn, zucchini, potatoes, red bell peppers and tomatoes.

Make a Green Bean Casserole
Of course, you can always add flavor to tasteless green beans by turning them into the classic Green Bean Casserole. But instead of using your oven, use your microwave. Grease a casserole dish, then add 5 cups of green beans- drain them if they're home canned. Spread 1 can of cream of mushroom soup over the beans. Sprinkle a cup of shredded cheese evenly over that. Top with French fried onions. Heat this Green Bean Casserole in the microwave on medium-high heat until it's heated clear through, about 10 minutes.

Author's Note: All of these quick and easy ideas use cooked green beans.
