My problem was that I was trying to overdo the decorating and wanting to do things that were just too elaborate. What I've learned is that decorating for a party around the holidays should be simple, quick and easy so you can get your focus back on what really matters. That would be your guests and having a good time!
The first step to making your decorations quick and easy is to pick a theme. A theme can be anything from a color to a specific item that you want everything to coordinate with. I find the easiest theme to be colors. For Christmas, I like to silver and blue. For New Years, I tend to go with lively colors like orange or green.
Once you have your theme picked out, next is figuring out how to incorporate that without your party turning into something completely overwhelming to the eye of your guests. We don't want to distract them, afterall. If your party is indoors at your house, you can change out your accent pillows to match your colors. Find flowers that match and set them up in cheap and easy to find clear vases. You can always go the way of the balloon, if you want. I only recommend using balloons if your space allows for it. If you have a lot of people around, someone will possibly bump into the balloons and maybe pop it resulting in a startled group of people.
If you're having a dinner party and you have your theme you really want to do, you can use the flower idea I mentioned before in your centerpiece. Also, finding table linens to match is usually easy if you just picked a color or two. If you did pick a snowflake theme for instance, you should be able to find items in the stores before the actual holiday. If you've waited until the stores have started phasing out those items, you can always make something yourself. I am a huge believer in stencils! Find a blank tablecloth and stencil your theme onto it with the appropriate paint for the fabric. You can even get your children involved with that if you're not worried if a stencil isn't exactly perfect.
When it comes to making decorating quick and easy, you just have to remember that it's the details that really matter. Focus on that; don't worry if you don't repaint your house so everything matches. Find little items that tie into your theme. Those are generally going to be the quickest to set up and take down once the party is over as well.
The tips I've given are great for the major holidays as well as birthday parties and other private celebrations. You should be focusing on having a good time, not having to worry if your decorations are in tact and looking good the entire time. Decorating for a party can bring it to a whole new level, but remember that it's supposed to be a good time. So remember to keep it simple and keep it easy.
