Do you have a leaky faucet. This isn't a pretty fix, but it will keep things quiet so you can get some sleep. Simply tie some dental floss around the faucet and let it dangle into the sink. The water will come out of the faucet and drip down the dental floss instead of dripping straight into the sink. This is a much quieter option and an easy fix until you can replace the faucet.
Squeaky floors can be really obnoxious. The true fix for this is to crawl under the house to repair the boards or seek home improvement help from a professional. A quick fix is to sprinkle baby powder on the wood where you hear the squeaks. The baby powder will absorb some of the space between the boards. It won't last long, but it should keep things quiet while your company is there.
Stains on white really stand out. If you have a carpet stain or table cloth stain, try mixing dish washing liquid with hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide works like bleach, so only try it on white items. You can also use hair spray to get rid of an ink stain, or table salt to wash out that red wine stain.
Do you have a hole in the wall? If it is small, like a hole that used to hang a picture, it is a simple fix. Again, take a trip to the medicine cabinet. This time grab the toothpaste. A small dab of white toothpaste will fill that hole until you have time to seek real home improvement help.
Sometimes you need to rearrange your furniture before your company comes. How awful it is when you move the couch only to find four dented marks on your carpet. This is an easy fix. Simply dampen a towel and iron over the towel over the spots. The steam will cause the carpet to fluff up and the dents will be gone.
There are many ways to fix up your house on limited time. Most of these things will still need to be fixed for real, once the company leaves either by yourself or by seeking home improvement help from a professional. You don't want dental floss to be hanging from your faucet forever, or your walls to smell of minty toothpaste. But these tricks will get you through temporarily.
