Quick Hemorrhoid Treatment Guide

1. What are hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are the swelling or inflammation of veins in or around the anal cavity. They are frequently described as either internal or external, though a hybrid exists called a prolapse hemorrhoid, where an internal hemorrhoid may extend outside of the anus.

2. What are some natural or herbal treatments?
Natural or herbal treatments include Butcher's Broom, Horse Chestnut, and Bioflavinoids.

Butcher's Broom - comes in capsule or cream form which may reduce swelling.

Horse Chestnut - comes in capsule or cream form which may strenghten vein walls.

Bioflavinoids - comes in capsule form which may protect veins and prevent bruising.3. Are these the only natural or herbal treatments?
No, the list of three is not exhaustive. Success has been found with St. John's Wort Oil, Vitamin E, Aloe Vera, and even more herbal treatments. Some treatments of hemorrhoids are in fact ways to soften your stool, prevent constipation and straining, and are actually forms of prevention, which are not addressed in this article. Natural treatments include bathing in hot water and using cold compresses which may alleviate pain, itching, and swelling, depending on the symptoms.

4. What are some over-the-counter, but not herbal treatments?
The most famous of them all is Preparation H brand hemorrhoidal cream. Preparation H is typically a hydrocortisone, which reduces inflammation and swelling. It may also alleviate pain and itching by itself or coupled with other ingredients. Other possible over-the-counter treatments include anti-inflammatories, but be wary of blood-thinning drugs, as hemorrhoids can bleed, and blood thinning may have a reverse effect on the healing process.

5. What are the medical treatments?
Medical treatments include laser removal and cutting off the circulation to the hemorrhoid so that it is removed. Other medical treatments may seek to shrink the hemorrhoid until it disappears. For more information on medical treatments, see a licensed professional.

6. What do I do if I am bleeding?
Bleeding is fairly common from hemorrhoids, but should not be taken lightly. If bleeding is heavy, or prolonged, see a licensed professional for a consultation. Note that the bleeding may increase as treatment shrinks the hemorrhoid, and before and after bowel movements.

7. What activities should I avoid?
Any activity that is uncomfortable is to be avoided.

Do not strain during bowel movements.

Avoid rubbing or pressing on the hemorrhoids.

Avoid anal sex.

Avoid sitting, standing, or walking for prolonged periods.
