Does your kitchen need a makeover? Does your kitchen look boring? When was the last time you've changed the style of your kitchen? Has it been more than five years? Are you on a tight budget and pressed for time? If you answered yes to more than three of these questions then it's time for a Quick Kitchen Makever in One Weekend!
Not to worry, a kitchen makeover doesn't have to break the bank or take an abundant amount of time. This kitchen makeover can be done with $100 and a weekend.
Before you do any work in your kitchen get a couple of boxes and clear as much clutter as possible out of the kitchen. Get a bucket of warm, soapy water and wipe down your walls, cabinets, and other surfaces. This will clear any dust or food splatters away. Move what you are able to. We moved the kitchen table and chairs out of the room. Appliances were only moved when it was time to work in those areas.
The first order of business is sprucing up the color on the walls. My kitchen walls were white. My cabinets were white. My kitchen was pristine looking when we purchased our home nine years ago. I loved it. After nine years, it had become boring and dull. I can't begin to explain how exciting it was to find the perfect kitchen color (yes our lives are very enthralling). First we were going to go with a mustard yellow. Then we changed our minds to a sage green. I'm glad we went with the sage green. It's a great color!
So, my husband is a planner. I would have just purchased a couple gallons of the paint. He decided in the long run it would be a better investment to just get the five-gallon container. This made sense because then you don't have to worry about the different cans being mixed differently. Plus you'll have it for touch-ups in the future. A semi-glossy white for the trim brightened up the dull trim woodwork. We painted two coats of the sage green and viola our kitchen was starting to look not so boring. Reference my article "A Fresh Coat of Paint Can Makeover a Room" for specific painting tips.
The next order of business was the cabinetry. We are lucky because our cabinets are high quality and not the kind that can or should be painted. All they needed was the wipe down mentioned earlier. Our splurge was replacing the boring gold knob hardware on the cabinets and drawers. My husband had been researching knob hardware for a couple weeks prior to this project so he was prepared. He went out and bought 35 new brushed chrome knobs. Perfect match with the sage green and white. I highly recommend using an electric screwdriver to remove the old hardware and install the new. Using an electric screwdriver will make this step in your kitchen makeover go smoothly and quickly. You'll be amazed at the difference new knobs makes in your kitchen!
The last step in your weekend kitchen makeover is to accent. Don't just put all the old décor back in place. Focus in on a certain color or type of décor. I know it's difficult to not just put it all back where it was. There are certain "things" I had sentimental attachment to but they just didn't fit into the décor of the kitchen. Simple matching color frames with photos (black and white photos are a nice change) make for a personalized kitchen. My sister's kitchen décor is another great example. Her décor is grapes and wine. Photos in black frames on her burgundy walls look fabulous. A friend of mine has teapots on the shelves of her kitchen. The key is not to clutter shelves, find your favorite pieces and use them as your accents. Have fun with it.
These four simple steps will guarantee a resh new look in your kitchen!

Post a CommentOh I want to do this ASAP! I'm tired of white walls! Great tips!
How fun Renee! I did a kitchen makeover while my husband was out of town for 2 weeks a while back. It took me just about every spare second in those two weeks because I had no help and also had an infant. I took down a wallpaper border, painted, spruced up the hardware and light fixture by spray painting it with a hammered metal spray paint, and made custom window treatments and chair slipcovers. I also bought some wall candle sconces and some new canisters for the counter top and kept it under $300. When my husband came home and saw it, he said, "did you take down the wallpaper? Something seems different." MEN!
