Quick Tips to Save While Traveling

Hopefully you did your research and saved money when you purchased your airline tickets. Getting to your destination is the next big step - and can cost a lot of money, which can only negate anything you may have saved in booking your tickets. With some quick tips, you can avoid the common pitfalls when traveling to and from your destination.
1) Pack efficiently.
Unless you're going on an extended vacation (more than 3-4 days), avoid checking in luggage like the plague. Airlines such as United and American Airlines charge for the not only the second bag, but the first piece of luggage as well. If you can't avoid these airlines, try to pack everything in a carry-on bag. This will also save you the headache of trying to get your luggage to your destination in the event that your flight is canceled.
2) Eat first or bring your own snacks.
While you can't avoid having to pay for that $2 bottle of water at the gate concession stands, you can bring your own sandwich and snacks on board. Better yet, have a big meal before going to security. Food concessionaires often pay a premium to be located in the airport and therefore pass the costs onto you. If you have to eat at the airport, try going to big name chain food stands - they often absorb the costs of any additional fees for setting up in the airport food courts.
3) Bring your own stuff.
$7 for a blanket and pillow? Really? If these are absolutely necessary, bring your own blanket, pillow and even headphones. Recycle or invest in a nice baby blanket and pillow and make sure to bring this every time you travel. You can also purchase them once, but don't lose them - bring them when you travel back or on your next flight.
4) Plan for ground transportation expenses to and from the airport.
You might have saved $50 on your airfare, but all that cash might go straight to ground transportation.
If possible, see if a friend or family member can drive you and pick you up from the airport - you'll be able to save on parking as well. Just remember to offer something in return - gas money, toll fare or if they refuse any money, return the favor sometime, write them a thank-you note or bring them back a nice souvenir.
On average, taxi fares to the airport from major US and Canadian cities are about $30-40 one way. If there are more than 2 people traveling, then you can split the costs so you won't end up in the red. For people traveling alone, consider taking public transportation or shared van rides. Check the website of the airport you are traveling to or try to call ahead in advanced for transportation options.

As always, every penny counts! Saving a little bit of money can add up in the long run.
