Quick Ways to Save on Gas

There's nothing to it. Just a hop skip and a jump, and boom. You're out $50-$100 at the pump. And that's not a pleasant feeling. Bottom line: No one is happy with the rise in the cost of gas. Notice I didn't use the word "rising" though. Because in my optimistic mind, the price of gas will be falling sooner than later. However, until that happens, we as consumers should be doing everything we can to save on gas.

It may not be easy to think about your finances if you are a person who isn't good with numbers or who hates keeping records. But you've got to do a little bit of something. Look at your bank records and see how many times you stop at the gas station and how much money you shell out each time. Surely, after you see how much money you spend, you will feel you need to kick into high gear and do something to cut down on your gas costs. Want to do that quickly and painlessly? Here's how you can do it.

I know. I know. you're probably thinking I'm going to tell you to choose a fuel efficient vehicle right? And you're probably thinking. "Hello, I can barely afford gas, let alone another car. Well, you're wrong. I'm not going to tell you that. More gas savings doesn't have to mean purchasing another car. But here's what it does mean: doing some things with the car you already have. You want to avoid the pain at the pump right? The price of gas was a whopping $4.00 yesterday, and I know that I'm not too happy about that. So to start saving money on gas today, here's what you should do.

Drop the weight.
Just like gaining weight on your physical body would make you move slower and act more sluggish, keeping extra weight in your car will do the same thing. So you know that habit you have of riding around with extra junk in your trunk? Kick it. You're only losing money because your gas mileage is going down proportionately with the weight of the stuff you're carrying around in your car.

Dust off that cruise control.
Don't take this as an opportunity to fall asleep at the wheel while your car does the driving for you. I'm sure many people have had detrimental accidents because they fell asleep while using cruise control. However, if you use some discipline and become more aware of the associated risks, cruise control can really save you some money on gas, especially when you use it while on the highway. That's because cruise control keeps your car at a consistent speed, and your car isn't constantly increasing the fuel it needs as you accelerate or put your foot on the gas.

Drive on overdrive
You know that overdrive section where the stick is? You know. You can put the car in drive, park, neutral and there's this one section you might not now know much about. It's called overdrive. Overdrive can save you money on gas. That's because when your car is in overdrive, the speed of the engine goes down. And that will increase your car's gas mileage.

To continue to increase your car's gas mileage, you can always do the typical things like keep making sure your tires have enough pressure or giving your car regular oil changes. You can also make sure you regularly change your car's filters. And then if you really want to save money on gas, you can always just take the bus. That'll save you money on gas for sure.

But the bus is not the most convenient mode of travel for everyone. So the tips above might be of more help.
