By now, you probably have experienced the dreadful symptoms of motion sickness. Whether you are carsick, seasick or airsick, the symptoms are all similar. Light-headedness, sweating, queasiness, followed by nausea and vomiting.

The cause of all this misery is a conflict of sensory input. It arises from the conflict of ears and eyes, in which the ears tell you that you are moving while your eyes say no. As your brain doesn't know how to deal with such a confusing input, it results in motion sickness.

This motion sickness, as in the flight itself, has a point of no return. Once you start vomiting, there is little hope of getting out of it until you get off the moving conveyance. So at the first symptoms of motion sickness, try these simple strategies to put a quick end to it.

1.Sit still with your head tilted back.
This will stabilize your head in order to minimize the vibration that cause motion sickness.

2.Stare at a fixed object or fix your gaze at 45 degrees above the horizon.
If that doesn't do the trick, close your eyes.

3.Avoid food odors and smoke.
If you are bothered by odors, tie a bandanna over your nose and mouth to help filter the odored air.

4.Skip the bon voyage party.
Fatigue, alcohol consumption and a hangover can worsen the symptoms of motion sickness.

5. Ask for a seat where there is minimal motion.
The most stable areas are in the front seat of a car or bus ( drivers almost never get motion sickness) or the middle of a boat or plane. If you are on a train, face forward and sit near a window. Always ask for a seat on the right side of the plane over the wing. Since most flight patterns turn left, you won't swing much.

6.Take ginger.
Powdered ginger capsules sold in health food stores can be more effective than Dramamine ( an OTC anti-motion sickness drug containing dimenhydrinate) in preventing motion sickness. Ginger is also safe for consumption as it is not a drug. You can take two 450 mg capsules about 10 minutes before your flight or cruise and two more when you start to feel queasy. Dramamine is taken 30 to 60 minutes before travel and can cause drowsiness.

7.Wear a scop patch.
If nothing else works, you may consider wearing a scop patch such as Transdermal Scop behind your ears. It contains scopalamine that prevent you from getting motion induced nausea but does not make you feel sleepy like Dramamine. Bear in mind it shouldn't be wear more than 3 days as it can trigger parchment of dry mouth to high blood pressure and cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heart beat).
