QuickStart Tennis Gets Kids into the Game

Wendy Dawn
QuickStart Tennis is an exciting new tennis format to encourage kids to learn and enjoy tennis. Historically, tennis has been a difficult game for kids. Tennis racquets are heavy and the courts too big to play properly.

The U.S. Tennis Association recognized that kids want to play games at which they can be successful. Tennis is very difficult for kids. Many give it a try and walk away from the sport in frustration.

The U.S. Tennis Association recognized that baseball, softball, football and other sports offer kids' leagues with modified fields and equipment. To help create and maintain youth interest in tennis the U.S. Tennis Association has modified the game, the equipment, and the court to help kids master and enjoy the game of tennis. This new program is known as USTA QuickStart program.

QuickStart Tennis gets kids involved by giving them a chance to succeed. In addition to modified equipment, smaller courts, and modified scoring are also a part of QuickStart Tennis. Everything about QuickStart Tennis is designed to accommodate the age and size of kids. The program divides tennis players into two leagues: ages 8 and under and ages 10 and under.

Kids seem to be taking to QuickStart and finding they actually enjoy tennis. The U.S. Tennis Association wants to expand QuickStart throughout recreational sports and even into schools. The idea is that introducing kids to tennis in a way which they can understand the rules, learn the fundamentals, and play well will cause them to want to continue to play.

Once kids master tennis through QuickStart Tennis many will want to continue to play. The U.S. Tennis Association sees QuickStart the same way other sports view kids' leagues. It is a fun way for kids to get fit and enjoy the game. It also grooms future tennis pros.

QuickStart Tennis's modifications allow kids to play successfully using the entire court creating a love of the game. Look for QucikStart Tennis programs to spread all over the country. If you manage or operate a sports complex, check with the U.S. Tennis Association about getting QuickStart Tennis started in your neighborhood.

Sounds like a pretty cool program. Right now my kids are in baseball but I would like them to have diverse experiences in sports so this might be another option. Great article!

What a great program. Tennis is such a great sport to stay fit. These young kids need that since the school PE programs are not doing the job. Great article.
