Quiet in the Country: A Review of Harper's Ferry, West Virginia

Amanda Lay
The weather has been unusually warm for mid November in Washington, DC. The leaves reached their peak later this year, so the colors are still very vivid, bright and beautiful. Recently, I took advantage of our unseasonably mild weather and went on a daytrip to Harper's Ferry, West Virginia with my Mom, brother and stepfather.

The Lord blessed us with a lovely sunny day for our trip! The air had a slight chill in it. The further north from my home that we drove, the more increased and brisk the wind became. We left our home around midmorning and arrived in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia after only driving an hour! I loved the rural countryside of Harper's Ferry. Being from the countryside of Atlanta, Georgia originally, I was surprised at how homesick that visiting Harper's Ferry made me feel.

The, "Hilltop Inn" is a historical landmark in Harper's Ferry. It is renowned for being in operation since the 1700's. I was surprised to learn that George Washington was a regular guest of the Hilltop Inn. We ate lunch at the, "Hilltop Inn Restaurant," which overlooked big, tall, and beautiful orange trees! The lovely orange trees were complimented by a breathtaking view of the prettiest, most magnificent mountains I have seen in a very long time! Our food was delicious! My mom ordered Chicken Quesadillas and Crab Bisque. Mom enjoyed her lunch. My brother ordered a Hamburger and Crab Bisque. A burger fan who has recently cut back, my brother thought that his hamburger was fair. My stepfather ordered a Hot Pastrami Sandwich and a cup of Crab Bisque Soup. My stepfather enjoyed his Crab Bisque Soup, but he was very disappointed in the poor quality of his Hot Pastrami Sandwich. For this reason, my stepfather did not at all care for his sandwich. As a general rule, whenever I eat out, I order one of my favorite foods that I do not ordinarily eat. I love crab cakes! For lunch, I ordered a Crab Cake Sandwich and French Fries. I definitely made a wise choice. My Crab Cake sandwich was delicious!

After lunch, Mom and I browsed through Harper's Ferry. Harper's Ferry has a variety of small, family-owned, shops and boutiques. Since Harper's Ferry has existed since the 1700's, many of the buildings that housed the shops were not accessible for my wheelchair. For this reason, we decided to stay in the van where it was warm. Mom and I waited patiently for my brother and stepfather while they went on a short walk across an old bridge nearby. Our patience was rewarded! When my brother and stepfather returned from their walk, they surprised Mom and I by bringing us a pound of delectable Homemade Fudge.

I loved the people in Harper's Ferry. The people in Harper's Ferry were very friendly, warm, helpful, and sociable. This was our first trip to Harper's Ferry. It certainly won't be our last! Do you enjoy being outdoors and taking fun, relaxing, day trips? If taking a day trip sounds like you, I highly recommend that you visit Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. Harper's Ferry offers all of the fun and relaxation of a trip without the pain and cost of a long distance. If you long for the slow pace, peace and quiet of the country, why not pay a visit soon to Harper's Ferry? Harper's Ferry may be just the place you have been searching for!

Nice article -- highlights what makes West Virginia a great place to live and visit. I highly recommend West Virginia -- the entire state, MandaLee. Great people. Great scenery. I live in Atlanta now, but West Virginia is still home.
