"Weinergate" -- the scandal that started when Congressman Anthony Weiner sent a lewd photo to a young female follower on Twitter -- has provided Americans with plenty of entertainment. But almost as funny as Weiner's predicament is the way in which other politicians have responded to it. The following quotes exemplify the range of reactions Weinergate has unleashed.
"The fact is, Anthony Weiner is a bad guy. He's a psycho -- he's a liar. He should never, ever be allowed to run for office again." -Donald Trump
On his Youtube channel, Trump reserved an entire vlog for a discussion about Weinergate. In this vlog, Trump claims that Weiner frequently requested campaign contributions during past elections. The silver lining to Weinergate? "I'll never have to give him [Weiner] campaign contributions and that's really wonderful," Trump said.
"The Weiner Sale: With Fares Too HARD To Resist." -Spirit Airlines Promotion
There's another silver lining to the Weiner scandal: It has inspired a discounted airfare promotion at Spirit Airlines, a public company that specializes in outlandish promotions. The promotion offers air fare starting as low as $18 round-trip.
"On June 6, 2011, Representative Anthony Weiner disclosed conduct which he described as inappropriate. An investigation by the Ethics Committee to determine whether the Rules of the House of Representatives have been violated is warranted." -House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi
In a letter addressed to the leadership of the ethics committee, Pelosi requested an investigation of the scandal in order to determine if Weiner's actions violate House rules, according to the New York Post.
"Andrew Breitbart -- showed up and 'Kanye'd' Weiner's press conference -- this is the weirdest f***ing story I've ever seen in my life -- or the greatest episode of Maury ever." -Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show."
With Weiner's press conference ending just hours before filming "The Daily Show," Stewart and his writers had to prepare their reaction in record time. The segment, christened "Jon Stewart Unloads on Weiner's Chest," included a clip of Weiner's teary-eyed apology, to which Stewart responded:
"You know we forget sometimes -- I certainly do -- that these people are human... And that's a lesson that's going to stay with me until I turn back to the camera over there and do a little bit on the John Edwards story."
"Instead of angrily demanding an investigation like anyone else would, Anthony has gone all St. Francis of Assisi on us." -Ann Coulter
In an op-ed posted before Weiner's press conference and confession, Coulter voiced her suspicions over Weiner's claim that his Twitter account had been hacked. She felt that Weiner was avoiding an investigation because it would prove that he posted the lewd photo.
"We've got a lot of serious challenges going on in this country and a lot of work for Congress to do. The last thing we need is to be immersed in discussion about Congressman Weiner and his Twitter activities." -Eric Cantor
According to Reuters, during a trip to Virginia, Rep. Cantor told reporters that he wants Weiner to step down. Cantor feels that the Weinergate scandal only distracts Congress from more pressing issues.
"Benjamin Franklin would have had to resign like 20 times if they had camera phones back then." -Comedian Erik Tanouye
Weinergate has been great fodder for comedians and their Twitter accounts, which are now filled with phallic jokes. Another favorite Weinergate Tweet by comedian Steve Martin: "BREAKING NEWS: Rep. Weiner has apologized to Paul Revere."
