I'm staying with my in-laws and the other day I noticed that the toilet paper roll was empty. So I did the yeoman's work and fastened a new roll of toilet paper. I guess you could say I go "under" as the toilet paper hung from the back rather than over the top. I'm not asking questions and I'm not pointing fingers but the next day I noticed that the toilet paper had been flipped; as in the attached picture. I thought this was pretty strange but paid it no mind. Then curiosity got the better of me and I put the question out to my Facebook friends to try and get an opinion of how people let their toilet paper sit. The response was strangely strong, highly opinionated, and surprisingly sat far more to one side than the other. The following is a - for the most part - in tact transcript.
Crystal Eynon: "Exactly like the picture, with the toilet paper hanging on the front side. It is on a toilet paper holder attached to my wall on my left."
Christina Gulla Blakeley: "Mine's just like the pic. I hate the thought of the toilet paper rubbing against the wall, especially in a public place."
Tamara Stephens: "TP over this way I am not fumbling around in the dark at night for the TP. I want to get back to bed as quick as possible without turning on the light."
Michele Poklemba Avery: "Over! I have a very strong opinion for the things that matter the most in life- toilet paper and socks. It's so much easier to get a clean tear and to find the sheet when it's over."
Lindsey Shea: "Over."
Melissa Brown: "Over is the only way to roll."
Kevin C Woods: "Jess my main man, my toilet paper ALWAYS hangs under, the opposite of the picture. Under is the true and only way to roll."
Lauren Robertine: "Under, most definitely! I actually had a long status update/ poll about this a few months back. Under, under, under!"
Tracey-Lynn Francis: "I'm throwing my 2 cents in for the OVER vote."
Jesse Buescher: "Over. I've heard under is good if you have pets (particularly cats) so they don't swat at it and end up unraveling half the roll if they do."
Cheryl Hoopes: "I don't care and I've never cared. I'd never noticed before I was married. But it's always over in our house b/c that's the way David HAS to have it. This always hit me as being curious, so while his mother was still alive, I asked her about it, since all he could come up with as a reason was that it was always that way growing up. So I asked her. She had an immediate answer, all right. Not sure if you want to hear it....With 3 small boys who were still learning how to be careful with, er ah, and this is delicate here, their, shall we say, toileting habits, she found that if it hung OVER, they never had to touch the wall to retrieve it....so that nothing ever got stuck on the wall....This is a sensitive subject, Jesse. But I always love sharing family history. And a story is a story, after all. :)"
Eldridge Brown: ""...''Æ'''½TP over definitely."
Larisa Wagner: "Over. End of story."
Gwen Nolan Lorinovich: ""...''Æ'''½...over of course!"
Karen Kochies: "Over, no question!"
So there you have it. That's 12 votes for over, two votes for under, and one for perhaps the most colorful toilet paper story I've ever heard which comes with a great big "I don't care." I guess the most important thing about toilet paper isn't whether it's over or under when it hangs on the rung rather that it all winds up in the right place when you're done using it.
