Carl Schurz was born in 1829 and died in 1906 but was an amazing man whom many admired.
He became the first German born in this country to be elected to the United States Senate, besides being a very independent, opinionated man he was a statesman, a reformer, a journalist, author, a newspaper editor and a General in the Union Army during the Civil War. Also His wife and Margarethe and her sister Bertha helped start the Kindergarten system in the US.
His most famous remark was "Our country right or wrong. When right, to be kept right; when wrong to be put right."
However, I want to quote another thought of his that deals with with ideals.
"Ideals are like stars; you will not succeed in touching them with your hands. But like the seafaring man in the dessert of waters, you choose them as your guides and following them, you will reach your destiny."
By Carl Schurz
