by Claude Levi-Strauss
Claude Lévi-Strauss was born in 1908 and is still alive as far as I know. I have not seen any notice of his death yet, which makes him very old.
He was one of the most influential anthropologists of the 20th century and he founder of Structuralism.
He refused to see western civilization as being unique and privileged and rejected history and humanism saying the savage mind is equal to the civilized mind. He came to this opinion after many trips to North and South American tribes studying their behavior. He gave us an idea of how the human mind works and he belives that when men become extinct he will leave few traces of his existence behind him..
His three loves in life were Marxism, geology and psychoanalysis.

Levi-Strauss was an independent, original thinker. Would that we had more like him these days. Of course, we just might, it's just that there's just so much crap drowning them out...
I love this--it tells that you need an enquiring mind, :) Sheri
