H L Mencken was a Satirist Who Criticized the American People for Their Sloppy Use of the English Language

Sorry not to be around much this week, my husband had another stroke and is back in the hospital again. This will have to be a quick Quote of the week. Since right now we are hoping for wonderful results and all the young people are being rather idealist. I thought this was a great quote.

Henry Louis Mencken was born in Baltimore in September of 1880 and died there in 1956 He was famous as a satirist, wrote essays and an American journalist who also was an editor but spent a lot of his life writing critics about Americans and their life style. During the early part of 20th century he was a very influential writer.

He is the man who dubbed the Scopes trial "monkey" trial and was know often as the Sage of Baltimore but he is probably best remembered for writing a huge series of books on how people in the United States spoke the English language.

"An idealist is one who, on noticing that a rose smells better than a cabbage, concludes that it will also make better soup."

- H.L. Mencken
