"The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship; it is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone else believes in him and is willing to trust him."
by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Emerson was leader in the Transcendental movement early in the19th century when it was not popular. He also was a prolific writer, poet, and essayist who could hold his audience's attention when he spoke. He originally was interested in religion and social issues but turned into a transcendentalist as time went on and wrote a speech called "The American Scholar" where he encouraged people to "Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you." He was a fascinating man and I encourage you to try to read some of his work.
