Quotes About the Royal Wedding

Jeff Musall
It was a worldwide spectacle, in all the possible meanings that statement might entail. From the exuberantly supportive to the rabidly disgusted, millions of people had an opinion they were willing to share.

With all the commentary about the ceremony itself and how the royal couple looked, this piece will instead focus on comments about the spectacle. From the mundane to the magnificent, over things as diverse as hats and economic theory.

Huw Edwards, the lead commentator for the BBC, raised a bit of a fuss when he made a comment about the view of Kate Middleton visible from his vantage point.

Edwards said "it's a limited view, but a splendid view." The camera was catching a view through the car windscreen, principally of Kate Middleton's decolletage. The comment drew rapid response on Twitter, making Edwards the fifth highest trending topic before the wedding started.

The hat of Princess Beatrice now has its own Facebook fan page, with over 42,000 "Likes." Comments range from the supportive to the humorous to the outright mean. The Los Angeles Times put together a collection of some of the best., including:

"Later she sets the hoop on her hat on fire and has little tigers jump through it for the amusement of the guests at the reception," and "She looks like a raccoon that mated with an octopus." Another funny one for science fiction fans, "Pretty sure that thing's a Stargate."

After finding out an Australian comedy mock-up couldn't be aired because the BBC denied feed of the wedding, Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd responded personally:

"My personal view is I really think the BBC needs to lighten up a bit and just get a bit of a sense of humor," Rudd told Australian television.

On the BBC News feature Have Your Say, readers are invited to leave comments on particular questions. One person left this rather schizophrenic response to the royal wedding:

"There are many people all over the world that would consider one bread roll on William and Kate's banquet table a lavish meal. Friday's event is perverse from almost all the view points. The Royal Family has lived an extremely lavish life-style for hundreds of years from the sweat of workers. Very odd indeed. I however wish William and Kate a happy life together."

Prime Minister David Cameron quipped about the British: "We're quite a reserved lot, the British, but when we go for it, we really go for it."

Ha ha, there were some stunning hats at the wedding, but Beatrice's wasn't one of them.
