A person has to always remember that a rabbit in nature is what is called a prey animal and that basically means that every other animal it will ever see probably wants to eat it. What does that mean as a pet owner of a rabbit? It means that you could actually scare a rabbit to death without even trying, they also have an incredibly low pain tolerance so rough handling by young children is not recommended. I have had many pet rabbits and I have come to find that many of the smaller rabbit breeds often called mini such as mini Rex, are much worse pets than their counter part that are bigger. I think the reason for this is because they are so small that they would be hurt much easier and that makes them a lot more likely to bite and scratch. The bigger the rabbit often means they are likely to be more relaxed. I do not recommend a pet rabbit smaller than a Rex which weighs between seven and 10 pounds.
The other two reasons for raising rabbits: Food, and Fur. I do not recommend raising rabbits for fur as there does not seem to be a market in America for rabbit fur, so unless you plan on using the fur for yourself then there is no point. I have however seen a few people make themselves some beautiful coats, and gloves.
Meat; I think that if a person wants to raise rabbits for meat then they will have a low cost substitute for store bought meat, that is free of chemicals; and is probably one of the healthiest meats that you can ever hope to eat. Rabbit meat is like a drier type of chicken. The cost of raising a bunch of rabbits is next to nothing compared to other types of meat.
