Rachel Maddow Points Out the Big Deficit Spending Presidents - Republicans!

Jeff Musall
The myth of "tax and spend" Democrats somehow being fiscal idiots while Republicans and conservatives are best trusted with budgets has, for some reason, held on to traction in part of the public's mind for decades.

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow did a segment called "Pin the Debt on the Donkey" in which she uses humor in a game show setting to point out that all of the Republican presidents since Reagan are the big deficit spenders.

Those in the know have been aware of this for years, yet some persist in claiming Republicans are more fiscally responsible.

Conservatives will tell you they want presidents to be "like Reagan" when it comes to budget policies, yet don't acknowledge Reagan tripled the deficit. And he also signed into law the biggest tax increase ever applied to working Americans.

Yes, he did cut taxes in other areas, but mostly to the rich and corporations. What began under Reagan was nothing short of a massive redistribution of wealth from the bottom to the top. Conservatives won't acknowledge that, either.

On a positive note, progressives are finally getting that message out.

Voters in Oregon passed two tax measures on January 26th that will restore at least a small part of the fairness stripped away over the years. It's a good, positive sign for the future that will hopefully be replicated in other states.

People around the country need to realize - Republicans primary focus is on enhancing the power and influence of corporate America and the wealthy elite while growing their own organization. And yes, there are too many corporate Democrats moving into that arena.

To vote Republican is to vote against your own self interest for the vast majority of Americans. We need real progressives with populist ideals and the compunction to act upon them.

Congress not the President controls the purse strings .. avg. congressinal spending w/ Dems in control most recent 7 yrs ... $619 billion a yr. vs repub's avg 90 billion a yr .. over the entire 7 yr span Dems 4.3 trillion vs Repubs 651 billion .. Maddow knows this and like most liberal elitests assumes we are too stupid to know any better..

So based on your title and point "DEFICIT SPENDING IS BAD, uuummmkay." Wow, and now ya use an attempt to defame Republicans as proof that your ideologies deficit spending is worthy this time around. Can ya say hypocrite? By all means use the "two wrongs DO make a right" mindset. Dealing with progressives is truly like having to deal with 8 year olds.

"To vote Republican is to vote against your own self interest for the vast majority of Americans." That says it all. The Republicans/Teabaggers (no difference) use their religious hypocracy and racism to get working class people to support their anti-working-class agenda - of the rich, by the rich, for the rich to get richer and richer.

Jeff, There is no doubt that YOU voted for measure 66 and 67 - Green Corps. - Thinking about moving to Oregon, made an about face. So, Jeff.... Result... Higher unemployment in Oregon.

I love that there is a Sarah 2012 advertisement on your piece; not what you'd intended. hahaha! anyway, this whole deficit thing is EVERYONE's fault. R's & D's just have different guys on different sides of their budgets proclaiming these amazing accounting moves. But as far as I go they're all corrupt. Though the Clinton Years are fond in my memory
