I have seen a couple of other podcasts and have gotten some general help and general advise on parenting and Autism, but they never seem to be very specific to my girls or what it is like to deal with these issues.
Recently AWN Radio addressed the use of restraints and seclusion in the school setting. It may seem surprising that parents have had to deal with this issue. But, often schools are ill equipped and need to be better trained on how to handle children with Asperger's Syndrome.
They often have experts from around the world speak on the program about new research. It seems to take a long time for this information to reach the mainstream media, so without hearing about it on the podcast, it could be quite some time before I hear about it at all.
I have sometimes been amazed at the people they have been able to get onto their program, like Tony Atwood and Temple Grandin. Both of them are well known in the field and have written books and lectured across the country.
The Director of the Autism women's Network has also been to the Whitehouse twice herself, by invitation. She has also been featured in an independent film that will go to the Sundance film Festival next year. So, this is not half rate production. The issues they address are timely, important and up to date.
I ran into a link for them when looking at the Pepsi Refresh Everything site. I wanted to vote for something that would help out my girls in the future, and they plan on hosting workshops across the country if enough people vote for their idea daily and they win the grant money.
Here are links to the Autism Women's Network Facebook Page, their Blogspot radio page and their grant proposal on the Pepsi website. I hope they are able to continue in their work. It is invaluable to a lot of parents out there, myself included.
