With music changing on a daily basis the way we hear music the way we purchase music and the way we view it, its great to see bands taking things in there own hands to change they way. Recently Radiohead announced there new album "In Rainbows" will be available for download on there website and that you can pay what ever you want for it whether it be $1.00 or $50.00 its up to you. Brilliant I think because doing it this way makes it easy for a major band or a indie band to release music with out the record label getting a cut, it makes the music more readily available to anyone anywhere poor or rich a fan or not. While I am not the biggest radiohead fan enjoying a few of there songs I was intrigued to purchase this album and found it to be a good album at that. What did i pay for it you may say? 3 Euros which equals out to about $4.26 US dollars a decent offer not knowing what i was getting into in the future Ill for sure pay more. Now the genius behind the deal is you offer your base album maybe 12 songs for whatever your audience wants to pay and then worldly release another CD including some unreleased tracks album art and maybe a voucher for a percentage off concert tickets or clothes from the band. Lets face it people pirating music will continue until the government shuts down the Internet and possibly even longer than that, in other words never, this is a great idea on how to curve the way we buy albums. Bands can still make profit, new bands can still be inspired, people can still keep whats left of there paycheck and we wont have hard working people being charged with jail time and fines because they could not afford $15.00 at the time.
How has it worked out for Radiohead so far you asked? According to Gigwise.com Radio has sold 1.2 Million copies and that ain't bad for an underground band with little media attention. We need other bands like Radiohead to take the lead in other ways to get there music out so people don't get rich holding artist hostage and forcing artists to prematurely release albums when they themselves are not happy with the product. In my opinion Radiohead succeeded immensely even if they only sold 1 album.
