Rain Interferes with Wheat Harvest in Kansas

Lana
Kansas is known worldwide for it's plentiful wheat crops, earning the nickname "The Wheat State" or " The Breadbasket of the World ". Wheat has been a major asset to Kansas since the 1800's,luring farmers to settle in the state for money making opportunities. The crops (weather permitting) are planted in the fall and generally harvested in early summer. This year so far the wheat farmers have only been able to cut wheat a couple days due to the amount of rainfall ,only 650,000 bushels have been brought to the coops compared to the 4.4 million bushels that is usually the average.

The past few days of solemn steady rainfall are going to result in a bad crop of poor quality wheat for farmers this year. There will be several acres that will not be able to be cut although some farmers will still cut what they can just to fill their contracts ,otherwise they would just take the loses and leave it in the field. The continual rainfall could cause the wheat heads to start sprouting which will be unusable wheat at that point.

What is suppose to be a thriving time of year for Kansas wheat farmers is actually turning into a very painstaking process, time seems to be running out for most of them to meet their said quotas.A couple good days here and there still lead to problems such as muddy fields that can cause their tractors to bog down making the time they usually intend on almost doubling.

In the past years there is usually a 10 day Kansas wheat harvest which most farmers fill all their contracts by June 30th but, this year may lead to several delays if the weather doesn't start cooperating.Fortunately because Kansas wheat is so hardy a couple warm sunny days could make amends for the days that have been lost.
