"Rain Man" the Movie Based on a Genius

Randy Jones
Everyone remembers the movie Rain Man which starred Tom Cruise who was the egocentric brother of Oscar for Best Actor winner Dustin Hoffman's character "Rain Man". The 1988 movie brought home an Oscar and 4 Academy Awards for it's depiction of a man who at a glance could rattle of counts of matches dropped on a floor and get very upset over missing The People's Court.

Many do not know the inspiration behind the movie which inspired it's writer Barry Morrow. The man who inspired the making of Rain Man was in his self short of amazing. His name was Kim Peek. Mr. Peek passed away Saturday from a major heart attack at a hospital in Salt Lake City at the age of 58.

Peek was of all accounts a savant who had a great memory. Though there are some fictional differences of the movie to the real life of Peek he did want to open the eyes of people to the misconceptions of mental disabilities traditionally seen as handicaps in society. Peek travel millions of miles talking to several million people as living proof that mental disabilities are actually in some forms misinterpreted blessings of genius.

Later in his life Peek was pronounced a "mega savant" and a genius in 15 different fields to include history and literature and numbers. This even though his motor skills prevented him even the task of dressing himself.
