Rainy Day Activity for Kids

Making a Play House Out of Your Kitchen Table

Lissa Bagley
Rainy days do not have to be boring. Even though it is raining and grey outside you don't have to be gloomy inside. Here in Colorado we have many "rainy days" due to the fluctuating weather we have. There is only so much of board games and playdoh that a mother can take so I have had to get creative when playing indoors with the children. Here are some easy directions to turn your kitchen table into a fun house.

First, you will need a large sheet or piece of felt that will cover your kitchen or dining room table. The edges of the sheet should touch the floor. While the sheet is over the table make a few marks as to where a door would be. Take the sheet off the table and cut a straight line where you have marked the door. This makes getting in and out of your fun house much easier. Next you can decorate your house. Using paints or scraps of fabric and tacky glue create doors, windows, flowers, birds, and anything else that you want on the side of your fun house. Once it has dried you have your very own fun play house!

When the weather prevents you from playing outside you can clear off the table and put up the fun house. My daughter likes to pretend that hers is a dog house or a cat house. She will spend hours bringing things in and out of the playhouse. We sometimes use cardboard boxes of different shapes and sizes to create appliances and furniture inside the house. She even likes to play in it when it's not a rainy day.

I hope that this idea will help other parents cure the boredom of a rainy day.
