Rainy Day Tips for Walt Disney World

Tips to Stay Dry on Rainy Days at Walt Disney World

Amanda M. Rose
Disney Rain Tip #1 Prior to any trip to Walt Disney World, guests should make sure to stop at the Dollar Store or Walmart and purchase a rain poncho. While Walt Disney World does have ponchos for sale, they tend to be extremely overpriced.

Disney Rain Tip #2 If you are expecting a lot of rain on your trip to Walt Disney World (to my friends that travel during Hurricane Season), a great tip is to invest in a rain coat or slicker. Ponchos are good for a couple hours but for an entire day that can get tiresome.

Disney Rain Tip #3 Pack a good pair of shoes that will be comfortable for Walking throughout Walt Disney, but that will also be waterproof. Crocs and Flip Flops are a great idea.

Disney Rain Tip #4 Bring a plastic grocery bag or a garbage bag to put your ponchos in after it rains or while on Walt Disney attractions. Keeping the wet ponchos away from everything else in your backpack will keep you much happier.

Disney Rain Tip #5 Bring a long a small towel, such as the towels that you use to dry your car, or the ShamWow towels. Pack the towels in a Ziploc bag and use them to wipe down benches, tables, ride seats, to sit on during Walt Disney parades, etc.

Disney Rain Tip #6 Bring an XXL Ziploc bag to place your entire backpack in if the rain is coming down really hard.

Disney Rain Tip #7 If you have a stroller with you, make sure that you pick up a stroller rain cover before you leave. The stroller cover works much better than putting a poncho or plastic over the stroller, and will keep your child dry, which can make a world of a difference on a long day at Walt Disney World.

Disney Rain Tip #8 If you have a stroller, make sure that you put the rain cover over the stroller every time you leave the stroller, Orlando is notorious for having sudden downpours, and putting a toddler into a soggy stroller can be a challenge.

Disney Rain Tip #9 If you are wearing running shoes, make sure to pack an extra pair of socks to bring with you each day to the parks. Happy feet, mean happy people!

Disney Rain Tip #10 If it's a rainy day and the park seems empty and you have always wanted to eat at that impossible-to-get restaurant, try walking up and seeing if they have any reservations open, many times people will cancel or won't show up if the weather is bad.

Disney Rain Tip #11 If it's really pouring rain with some lightning and thunder, it may be a good idea to just jump on the monorail and do a loop until the rain stops. Worst case scenario is that the rain stops once you jump on and you do a quick loop and get to see the different resorts and parks.

These are some awesome tips. Sure wish that the 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea ride was still around...but, it did give me some good material when I tracked down the location of those submarines! Lol. Thanks for the great article. (I'll be trying that restaurant "walk up" tip next time it's raining)

When we go to WDW in September, an occasional pop-up shower or downpour is inevitable. We usually end up buying the WDW rain poncos. They're really not priced too bad and they're fairly sturdy. We've often used them when we get home and when we return to WDW. My #1 rainy day tip is to head to the parks. Most people avoid the rain and stay in their rooms. You would be surprised how empty the parks are.

If you go the poncho route, bring a box of band-aids with you. I saw this on my last trip (May 09) and loved the idea. Ponchos tend to rip on top of the head and around the neck after being pulled on/off. Use the band-aids to hold the pieces together. Clear band-aids will go unnoticed while Disney band-aids will add some Disney flair to your non-Disney ponchos.

Bringing your own ponchos is so much cheaper than buying them in the parks - just make sure you remember to take them when you leave the hotel! (Been there, done that)

Good tips that apply when visiting any theme park. I've wandered a few on rainy days without protection and it's cold and miserable.
