Rally Planned for Genarlow Wilson, Teen Convicted Of Sex Crime

Leaders in the African American Community Will Join at the Capitol to Demand Genarlow Wilson's Release

ATLANTA -- According to the Associated Press, today at 6 p.m. black leaders and concerned citizens will gather at the state capitol in show of support for a teen who was jailed after having consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old girl when he was 17.

On Monday a judge made a ruling that Genarlow Wilson, 21, should be released and his name not listed on the Georgia sex offender registry.

The Monroe County Superior Court Judge said Wilson's punishment was "a grave miscarriage of justice."

Wilson will have to wait 3 weeks for a bond hearing scheduled for July 5.

John Lewis, a senior member of congress, made a plea to Thurbert Baker, the Georgia Attorney General, to drop the case against Wilson. Because there is no legal options to hurry the hearing, Wilson will have to await his court date.

Wilson was originally charged as an adult and sentenced to a mandatory 10 years in prison.

they don't need to be in the same school. As for race, statistics support that people of color, minorities are given harsher sentences. Do your I remember doing the same things Genarlow did - drinking and having sex. We also would get motel rooms for special occasions - prom, graduation night, etc. We were not bad kids, we were just having fun. So me and everyone I know would be in prison and labeled as a child molester. They would have to build a lot more prisons. We did those activities as teenagers but we grew, became doctors, engineers, teachers, businessmen/women, etc.

It teaches you about protection and sexual diseases, not that a 17 year old having consensual sex with a 15 year old is a crime. Ignorant people like you piss me off. You don't find out all the facts, you are narrow-minded, you don't know this boy but you are judging him and saying he knew what he was doing. He was a typical teenager. They engage in sex, drinking and smoking weed. My son is 17 and I pray he is still a virgin, that he doesn't do drugs and I know that he drinks. But if he does all 3, do you think I want the law to pass judgment and arrest him. They don't and should not have the right. It's my job as a parent to parent my son not the legal system. And you tell your kids all day long not to engage in those activates, but they are going to make their own decisions. When I was a teenager I always dated older guys. Freshmen girls (15 year olds) date upperclassmen. That's always been the case. If they don't want a 17 and 15 year old to interact sexually, then they don't need t

First of all Isabel, he did not take advantage of a 15 year old. She wanted to give oral sex to those boys. So he did not rape her or abuse her. She wanted to have sex. And I'm sure she was not a virgin. She is 18 now and has a 2 year old. So she was around 16 when she got pregnant. She was not taken advantage of and she said that. No one is making excuses. Teenagers are going to have sex - period! They do not deserve to go to prison for it. You say she shouldn't have given a 17 year old a blowjob. Well, that situation should have been between her parents and his parents. Talk to them, ground them, DON'T imprison them. No one is saying it's okay - what we are saying is that being arrested and convicted is wrong. It may be immoral but it should not be a crime. You would have to lock up 99% of teenagers. And if society does not want teenagers to engage is sex and oral sex, then take sex off the TV, out of the music, and off the Internet. Hell, sex education is taught in high school. It t

I think the laws actually vary widely by state. I'm almost positive my home state had a bigger age gap-something like over age 18 and under age 12.

Omg, I absolutely think this is ridiculous. My husband and I have been together for over 12 years since he was 15 and I was 17. (he's 18 months younger than I am). You're telling me I would be a sex offender using this logic. When I was 17, should I have only been allowed to date boys who were a week or two within my age range. The 18-month age difference was hardly an issue for me and my husband. Of coures, he was in high school while I was in college, and I was in grad school while he was finishing college. Please, this story (and sentencing) is just ridiculous.

Hello, she was fifteen, just because he was seventeen doesn't make it okay. Does everyone think that he was stupid and didn't know what he was doing? Come on, if you'll do it when you are seventeen, what would change when you were eighteen. Black, white, pink or yellow, let us not confuse the issue of taking advantage of a fifteen year old when you are seventeen, of being about color. It is not about color, it is about a society that sees nothing wrong with abusing girls. Oh poor boy, consensual, but still ilegal, even in Scotland, where the age for legal sex is 16. He's a scoundrel, here we go again with the race card. I myself am not a racist but the way that color is used in America to let men off with sex crimes because they are a celelbrity is disgusting. Stop making excuses, girls age fifteen should not be giving seventeen year olds blow jobs. Okay!
