'Ramona and Beezus': is it Worth the High Movie Prices?

Ebie Harris
Okay, I have to admit it. My children are not even old enough to go to the movies yet. However, I found myself in line today for "Ramona and Beezus." The trailers for the movie is not what pulled me in. It was definitely the fact that as a child I read the books about Beezus Quimbly and her obnoxious but endearing sister, Ramona.

Of course we often find out the books are better than the movie. I would say there is no exception to the rule here. The movie was entertaining, but really lacked the feel of the book. "Ramona and Beezus" was loosely based on the books at best. Beverly Cleary's novels had more of a light playfulness to them. The plot of this movie was definitely changed to keep up with the times.

We are introduced to Joey King, who I feel, really does capture the spirit of Ramona. Joey King is simply charming and appears to have this down to earth attitude that makes her feel as if she could be our own daughter. Selena Gomez, the star of Disney Channel's hit show "Wizards of Waverly Place," does an accurate job of portraying Beezus Quimbly. The chemistry, the sibling rivalry, between these two girls is well played.

"Ramona and Beezus" is rated G for the general audience. Throughout the 104 minutes this movie ran I was entertained. There were parts of the movie when you cannot help but smile as this little third-grader, Ramona, gets into trouble.

Was "Ramona and Beezus" worth the high price of movie admissions? For me it was. For ten dollars this movie took me back to my own childhood.

My recommendation though for those of you that have children that have not read the book; buy them the novels by Beverly Clearly. These books are great reads for both children and parents together. They are enjoyable and your child will not want to put them down. Who wouldn't want to find out what trouble Ramona gets into next?

Then when "Ramona and Beezus" comes out on DVD make a movie night of it. In the end how can you say no to a movie that shines light on the bond between two uniquely individual sisters.

Some books should not be made into a movie.

I read my Ramona books until the pages fell out. And then I taped them up and read them some more. ;) I'm curious about this movie but oh so weary of Selena Gomez...
