Random city sounds
Deafen worshipers foolish enough
To listen
And to expect to hear truth.
Beauty bludgeoned.
One blade of grass cries
Upwards
Toward threatening skies.
A tempestuous void
Where the eternal nothing
Begets yet nothing
And the wispy something escapes
Unnoticed
Through the screen door
'Round the back
Of the alley which has
Both ends
Marked as exits.
Midnight and mid-day collide
In the exhausted exhaust
Exhale
Of communal fetid breath
Aimed at the final flicker
Of a once courageous flame
Just a moment
Before it's prancing death.
No Coney Island of the mind,
Rumbling in pained ecstasy
The city is cruel
But not unkind.
Resting its head on a pillow
Of tears,
Hoping to find a restful sleep
Random city sounds
Flow slowly
From the sidewalks
'Cross the curbstones
To the street.

Post a CommentQuite a bit different from your usual poetic style, but very effective and well done. Thanks!
Cool poem nice job Laura Everly
super
Very excellent poetry.
Love this poem I felt the beat of the city," not unkind but cruel", through the back alley screen door powerful and unforgettable images, superb work David...
Great! I can remember those noises from when I lived up in NYC
Great descriptions!
I just love living in the mountains away from all that noise.
Great imagery.....a bit sad......but really good.
I just shut the window near my computer because it was getting too noisy outside. It is debatable whether or not North KIngstown qualifies as a city, but I find it hard to concentrate whatever kind of noise is coming in through the open window, unless it is natural. I am working on learning to filter out those annoying city sounds-lawn mowers, trucks idling, etc.- but some days I am more successful at it than others.
