Idahoans were once called Fortune Seekers because of all the people who moved there to mine silver or gold.

Mining lobbyist George M. Willing made up its name. Although, when George M. Willing suggested the name he told people that it was a Shoshone Indian word meaning "Gem of the Mountains".

Other interesting famous people include the Indian guide Sacajawea, the poet Ezra Pound, and the actress Lana Turner.
