Unless he decides to go all Brett Favre on us, the talented but troubled wide receiver Randy Moss decided to call it quits Monday as he announced his retirement through his agent Joel Segal.
If this is indeed the end of the road for Moss, he will go down as one of the best wide receivers to play the game, as evidenced by his 14,858 receiving yards (which are fifth all time), 153 receiving touchdowns (tied for second all time), 954 receptions (tied for eighth all time) and seven Pro Bowls. Moss also eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark in ten out of his 13 seasons in the NFL.
Moss was labeled as a troubled player right out of college, but the Minnesota Vikings still drafted him with the 21st overall pick out of Marshall. Mss spent over seven years in Minnesota putting up gaudy numbers, with his best year arguably coming in 2003 when he hauled in 111 passes for 1,632 yards and 17 TD's.
His next stop was with the Oakland Raiders, as he spent two mediocre seasons there before heading to New England to team up with Tom Brady. Moss spent over three seasons in New England with his best season coming in 2007 as he helped New England reach the Super Bowl by catching 98 passes for 1,493 yards and an NFL record 23 TD receptions. His play in the Super Bowl was also decent as he caught five passes for 62 yards and a score.
After falling out of favor in New England, he was then sent to Minnesota again where he played only four games, and then spent the rest of the season with the Tennessee Titans, where he did very little if anything at all.
Whether he is serious about retiring or not, the discussion will arise if he is Hall of Fame worthy. His numbers clearly speak for themselves, but his attitude and his admission of taking plays off will hurt his chances. My only hope is that Terrell Owens also retires this season, because if both inducted, I would love to hear their speeches in Canton!
