Randy Quaid, Evi Quaid Released from Canadian Detention Facility

Quaid's Claims They Are Being 'Persecuted' by So-called 'Hollywood Star Whackers'; Seek Asylum in Canada

Actor Randy Quaid, 60, and his wife Evi, 47, were released from custody in Canada after spending almost a week in a detention facility. Evi Quaid declared she was a Canadian citizen, which has been confirmed by the Canada Border Services, according to Fox News.

Randy Quaid was released on $10,000 bail and Mrs. Quaid was released unconditionally after Canadian officials determined she has a claim to Canadian citizenship through her father.

The Quaid's had been held since last Thursday when they were arrested on outstanding warrants in the U.S. on felony vandalism charges in Santa Barbara. The couple was found "squatting" in a guesthouse on the property they used to own. They were due in court Monday.

The Quaid's Say They Are Being Persecuted by Hollywood 'Star Whackers':

In a bizarre story that has more twists and turns than a good novel, the Quaid's claim they are requesting refugee status in Canada because they believe they are being persecuted by a group of Hollywood "star whackers" and their lives are in danger.

According to the Washington Post's Celebritology, the Quaid's claim these so-called "star whackers" are responsible for the deaths of stars such as Heath Ledger and David Carradine. Respective investigations into these deaths showed no foul play was involved in either death.

A note held up by Randy Quaid in the courtroom in Canada read in part, "Yes we are requesting asylum from Hollywood 'star whackers' Evi and Randy Quaid.

ABC News reports Evi Quaid said in Vancouver last week, "Hollywood is murdering its movie stars. Randy has known eight close friends murdered in odd, strange manners. ... We feel that we're next."

Randy and Evi Quaid are expected to appear in court in Santa Barbara November 2. The senior Deputy District Attorney in Santa Barbara says the U.S. warrants will remain outstanding.

The Quaid's Can't Seem to Stay Out of Trouble. Who's Leading Who?

The Quaid's have had several run-ins with authorities. They were charged with defrauding an innkeeper, burglary, and conspiracy in Montecito, California in September 2009 and they used an invalid credit card to pay the tab at the Biltmore, a Santa Barbara luxury resort.

The Quaid's skipped town and were arrested in the West Texas town of Marfa where they were released on bail. Charges against Randy Quaid were later dropped and his wife Evi received three-years probation and was ordered to perform 240 hours of community service after pleading no contest to misdemeanor defrauding.

The actor and his wife have repeatedly failed to show up for court appearances in connection with their tomfoolery. Their antics have people scratching their heads in bewilderment. Are they suffering some sort of simultaneous mental break? Is Randy just along for the ride, or is Evi? Time will tell what is really going on with this couple.

Randy Quaid is best-known for his role as Cousin Eddie in the 'National Lampoon's Vacation' movies.

Update: According to the Montreal Gazette, the admissibility hearing before the Immigration and Refugee Board in Vancouver on Thursday was carried over until Nov. 8, to allow Quaid's lawyer time to prepare.
