Randy Travis Apologizes for Being Drunk Outside a Dallas Church

Tina Samuels
Randy Travis, the country singer who enjoyed a good popularity in the early '90s before switching to a more gospel-Christian genre, was arrested Feb. 6 for being drunk outside a Dallas church. Mr. Travis lives within 25 miles of the Dallas area, so he was not too far from home. Police have also stated he kept asking to go home and could smell alcohol on his breath and about his car.

The Scene

Police were called after neighbors had suspicions on the dark car sitting by the church. Travis was apparently alone in the car, no word if the car was running or had already been shut off by this time. When the police did arrive, according to Xfinity, they found Travis drunk and clutching an open container of wine. The police on the scene said that Travis was slurring his words as he tried to explain how he got into an argument with his girlfriend, but had difficulty getting the story out. Between the open container of alcohol, the smell on his breath, and the slurred speech, police opted to arrest the singer and take him into the jail.

The Arrest

According to TMZ, Travis was then arrested for public intoxication, a misdemeanor charge, and took to jail around 1:30 that morning. The Sanger Police Department booked him and then released him a few hours afterwards. It is typically common for the police to hold drunken individuals a few hours to help sober them up before releasing them to the public.

The Mugshot

Travis' mugshot shows a half-grin, knitted brow, graying temples, and bright eyes. Travis appears to almost be scowling.

The Apology

Around noon PST the same day, Travis released an apology stating, "I apologize for what resulted following an evening of celebrating the Super Bowl." This was a different story than the police have stated he was talking about on the morning of the arrest.

More details are to follow coming on the heels of this newly-breaking news story. Travis is best known for his songs "Digging Up Bones", "Too Gone Too Long", and "It's Just a Matter of Time".
