While many people are surprised that the legendary Canadian rock band The Guess Who isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the band's top five best songs along with their myriad other hits are what make the strongest case.
The band pumped out some of the most well known classic rock songs of all-time in their heyday and their legacy has lived on since they become popular in the mid-to-late 1960s.
The Guess Who has continued to tour despite losing members and only maintaining two of the originals (Jim Kale, who played bass, and Gary Peterson, the drummer), however, playing most of the hits that originally made them famous.
Here is a list of the band's top five best songs of all-time:
5. Hand Me Down World-
At a Detroit concert in July 2011, Kale talked about the positive message in this song. But the best part about the song in many fans' eyes is the raw emotion and heavy grooves that signified many of the best aspects of the band. This one is a definite crowd pleaser that's great for singing along to at shows or in the car on a breezy summer day.
4. No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature-
This is one of those omnipresent tracks that can be heard on movie soundtracks, in the background at a friend's house on the radio, and on TV. A song about not having that someone special to share life with morphs into a whole new sound midway through. This is one of those songs that embodies the true feel and energy of the 1970s as well as any other and that's part of the reason why it's on the top five list of the best Guess Who songs ever.
3. Undun-
Original member Randy Bachmann as well as Kale have both called this their favorite song by the band in the past and it's easy to see why. The grooves on this one are infectious as are the lyrics, which just about everyone seems to know regardless of age, and the flute solo adds another layer of creativity to the track as well, making it a timeless classic sure to be played for decades and decades to come.
2. No Time-
Another song with a universal theme and a classic late-60s/early 70s groove, this one has a tendency to get stuck in the minds of both diehard and casual fans alike. Another mega-hit from the band that will surely be played on rock radio stations for many years. Songs like this are yet another reason why The Guess Who needs to be inducted into the American hall of fame, as opposed to only the Canadian one.
1. American Woman-
This song is, simply put, the embodiment of the "classic rock" genre in the United States. The lyrics are familiar to just about anyone who's ever turned on a radio and the song has been covered perhaps as much as any other, whether by mainstream bands, garage bands, or simply by friends at the karaoke bar.
In fact, this song, while ironically created by a Canadian band, should be considered powerful and iconic enough to punch the band's ticket to the Hall of Fame on its own.
The classic track "American Woman" ranks number one on the list of the top five all-time best songs by The Guess Who for these and many other reasons.
