Record executives are responsible for the type of music that we hear on the radio. The radio DJs have a play list. They do not choose themselves what songs we hear on the radio everyday. They just play what is on the play list. The problem with this, as far as rap music is concerned, is that we don't get to hear songs that have much meaning. We're forced to listen to songs that were made to make people dance or songs where the rapper is just talking about how rich or fly he is. A lot of times those songs sound great, and we'll go pick up the album only for 11 out of 15 songs to be all talking about the same things.
We don't have a record deal, so we really couldn't tell you if the rapper has any say so in this situation. There is a lot more to life than cars, clothes, money, being in the club, and jewelry. If rappers are that bored, that lazy, or that shallow that they can't make a full album of records that have some kind of true meaning, they should stick to rapping on myspace. Record sales are beginning to tell this same tale, somewhat. Rap albums aren't going platinum as often as they used to. It seems that now the only rap albums that are going platinum consistently, are albums of those who make music that appeals to everyone.
Kanye West is the best example of a rap artists that makes good music. Anyone can relate to his music because his songs are real to people. Other good examples are Ludacris, Jay-Z, T.I., etc.. Obviously there are many more, but on the flip side, not everyone who makes real music is getting the credit that they deserve, mostly due to lack of promotion or media coverage, and radio play. Internet downloads, are causing music industry album sales to suffer as a whole, but we would be more willing to pay for a record or even pay for our downloads if we knew we were getting quality music. Rap records just don't appeal to people who listen to rap music as often as they used to.
