Rapex: Anti-Rape Condom

Celin Childs
Imagine being a young woman in an HIV/AIDS infested corner of the globe. You are precautious and unmarried. You worry everyday you have to go out into the world that a man with AIDS will force you to have sex with him. The women in South Africa deal with this dilemma everyday. Some of the women are forcibly raped eventually contracting the disease and losing their dignity as well as their lives.

This is why a new invention will soon be offered to young women who are afraid of going out alone and getting raped. Rapex, the anti-rape condom was invented by South African Sonette Ehler after hearing a rape victim tell her, "If only I had teeth down there." Rapex is shaped like a female condom and is worn internally and prepared with 25 teeth inside of its lining. If a man is to attack a woman and try to have sex with her with the Rapex on, the razor-sharp teeth will fasten onto the attacker's penis when he attempts to penetrate. Although the attacker is sure to be in a lot of pain, the device has no lasting damage, making it completely legal to sell. They will be priced for 1 Rand, which is equivalent to about 14 cents; it will also be available in small, medium, and large sizes.

Not only does the Rapex condom allow the attacker's penis to get "bitten", but it also cripples the attacker long enough for the victim to run free. Some people are afraid that the Rapex condom will cause the attacker to try to harm the victim further out of anger for having the condom bite his penis. Others argue that it is a vengeful tactic and the only way to keep you safe is by yourself.

The reality of this condom is that it has the ability to help stop the rape problems in South Africa. South Africa has the highest rape rate in the world. This is why Ehlers, the retired blood technician decided to invent Rapex.

Rapex is inserted and removed with an applicator. It cannot disappear in the body because it cannot go past the cervix. It will not vanish into the bloodstream either. In order to prevent infection it is recommended that a woman put a new one on daily. It can also prevent STD's and is about as comfortable to wear as a tampon. Women do not have to worry about removing the device once the rapist has penetrated, it will automatically latch on to the rapist's penis to give the victim time to run free.

The device can also be worn on dates in order to prevent date rape. After wearing the device, it is supposed to be removed with the applicator, which will cause the hooks to attach themselves to the applicator stick. The condom is then completely sealed before it is discarded. This product should be removed and discarded properly in order to ensure safety.

Personally, I think that this is a great idea for all of the young women in South Africa. My heart aches for the many women who have already become rape victims. It is unfair that a woman cannot go out without worrying about being attacked by men. I know that this device also puts the responsibility on the woman, but we, as women need to be responsible for our own safety. I also understand that when a woman is raped, it is not her fault, it is the man's but she should do all that she can in order to protect herself. I also know that victims run the risk of being killed by their attacker if the condom latches on to their penis, however, women would run the same risk if they did not put the device on. I hope that this device will soon be available across the world. Maybe this device will open the eyes of potential rapists, that if they stick their penis into the wrong place, it might get bitten.

I hope that God Willing this article will be of some help.
