Like any other country, America has fruits that are rare to find. Seasonal change and original place of cultivation makes a country rare with some fruits. Listed below are some fruits that are rare in America.

Durian - this fruit is abundant in Southeast Asia during summertime. Known as "king of fruits", durian is not easy to eat. Some find this fruit unbearable to eat because of its strong smell. And when you eat, you have to be careful since this comes with a skin that is spiky. There are signs in choosing a good durian. The strong smell means it is totally ripe. Choose for the stem that is big and solid, and the weight must be light. Another way is by simply shaking the durian, if you hear the seed moving then that means it a good pick. You can have a rich dessert from its custard-like consistency. You can find this in America, usually in Asian grocery stores.

Kiwano (Horned Melon) - this fruit is originally from Africa and now grown in California and New Zealand. People got confused about this kind of fruit. Its look is similar to that of pomegranate, has a smell of banana, and seeds like in cucumber. But the sure way to see the real Kiwano is by checking the spikes. It must have a yellow spike surrounding it with seeds throughout. Its inside is gelatinous and in bright green color.

Lychee - this small rough nut shaped fruit is native in Southeast Asia and abundant during summer. This is related with Rambutan; it comes in red color and has white gelatinous insides. Many use this in some desserts because its flavor is sweet and citrusy. This can be eaten fresh but some prefer dried.

Pitaya (Dragonfruit) - originally grown in Mexico and central and south part of America. Today, it is cultivated in different countries like China, Israel, Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries. This is a fruit coming from cactus plants and believed to grow only at night that is why this fruit is labeled as "queen of the night". This comes in bright reddish pink color and has insides that have black specks all throughout. Other distinctive feature of this fruit is that it has leathery skin and the curly green spikes protruding from it. This fruit also has other color variation, the red flesh or yellow skin.

Guava - this fruit lives in a humid environment. This tropical shrub is grown in Mexico, Caribbean, and Central and south parts of America. The fruit has a strong odor that is bearable. Its taste is sweet and flavorful. The red flesh of this fruit is very juicy. This can be used in desserts. This pear shaped fruit has seeds that are chewable. This can be eaten raw.

Carambola (Starfruit) - this fruit is found primarily in Sri-Lanka, Indonesia and other countries in Southeast Asia. Now, this is grown commercially in Hawaii and Florida. Now, America is selling the Carambola. This is crunchy and juicy when you eat this fruit. Because of it citrus taste, some would say, this fruit is similar to apple and grapes. Consumers are advised not to eat this fruit especially those with kidney problem since this fruit is said to be acidic. And for those taking medicines, studies show that effectiveness of some drugs is improved when you eat this. This can be used as wine as well. Other countries use this fruit as main ingredient in tea pickles. In latitude cut, this creates cool star shape.

Mangosteen - this fruit is not related to a mango. This is originally grown in Southeast Asian countries. This has become valuable fruit in the states and very expensive in the West. The edible part of mangosteen is creamy, citrusy and sweet. It is best harvested when it is dark in color. The taste would be best if you eat this fruit before it turns purple or blue-black.
