This photograph was taken about two weeks ago at Calcasieu Lake. This lake is in the southwestern part of Louisiana, just north of the Gulf of Mexico. The captain, Erik Rue, was out on the lake trying to catch some fish, when he saw five dolphins. This unusual event happened on June 24. There were four gray dolphins, and an unusual pink looking dolphin. All the pictures the captain took can be viewed on the Calcasieu Charter Service website.
You can see the pink dolphin swimming very close to the other dolphins in each picture. In one of the pictures, the pink dolphin is in the center of the other four dolphins. It is almost as if the other four normal gray dolphins are protecting their pink dolphin friend.
Based on a report from Wikipedia, there is a known type of pink dolphin that lives in South America. This dolphin is called the Amazon River Dolphin or the Pink River Dolphin. This dolphin lives in freshwater and was first described in 1817.
The Amazon River Dolphin has the ability to change into the color pink. When the dolphins are growing up, they stay a grey color. Sometimes they come in shades of blue grey or cream white. When this species of dolphins gets over excited, they turn into a pink color. This is why they are know as a sort of pink dolphin species.
The pink dolphin that was photographed in Louisiana, is not the species from South America. This dolphin is a bottlenose dolphin. According to the Calcasieu Charter Service website, they say "It appears to be an uncanny freak of nature, an albino dolphin, with reddish eyes and glossy pink skin. It is small in comparison to the others it is traveling with, and appears to be a youngster traveling with mama."
The passengers and captain on the boat that day in June, reportedly watched the dolphins for an entire hour. If you're ever in the area of Louisiana, close to the Calcasieu Lake, it might be a good idea to take a camera with you. You just might capture a photo of this rare pink dolphin.
