Rare Tornado Hits Oklahoma City

Stacy Fisher
A massive series of four super cells moving West to East from Central Oklahoma are sweeping through the state as we speak.

Damage is also widespread and being reported throughout Oklahoma County. One Oklahoma City eyewitness, Yvette Depaepe said, "The skies went from still clear blue to green-gray in matter of minutes." Nickle-sized hail and heavy rain wrapped the cell This MASSIVE wall cloud formed in Mustang and worked its way right over her house! The western edge of the wall cloud extended to Garth Brooks Blvd in Yukon, the southern edge at 10th St, the Northern edge extended over the Kilpatrick and the eastern edge was over to Meridian. So it was obviously well over several miles wide but it has weakened now but we are still under a warning."

Yvette said she "had to scrabble fast." She further states she had no time to pack up and leave so she grabbed the mattress off the bed and dragged it into the hallway. She also had an overnight bag for the lakehouse was still packed so I just threw it in there with all the animals along with what critical papers she could find quickly and took cover! KFOR news is reporting electrical flashes from power poles just southwest of our house. She said she is not so prepared for tornadoes...we got to be more prepared..."It was a close call."

Deer Creek and Guthrie Public Schools will not be running buses and locked down. Putnam City, Oklahoma City, and Edmond public schools are all in lock down at this time and will not be releasing students until the storms pass.

There is now reported damage @ NW Expressway & Rockwell...Target sign is down, damage at the Hobby Lobby and Chuck E Cheese...the intersection is impassible and is shut down due to power lines & poles down on roads, and power is out to over 3,000 people in our area. They are now confirming that the tornado did touch down on Rockwell (just south of us). Power is still going on and off frequently, too.

Tornadoes this time of year are not unheard of, but they are rare. More to come as it is reported.

    Hi Sheryl,
It is not rare that Oklahoma has tornadoes, but it is rare to have F3 strength combined with multiple touchdowns in February. Tornado season starts in late March and dies down around early September. Thanks for reading!

What's with all these tornadoes in places that don't usually have them? This was sad. Prayers to the families.
