Rating the Nissan Cube Based on Its Novelties Makes it a Really Special New Car

Nissan Cube Review was a Fun Assignment to Cover Since This is a Cute Little Car!

Michael MrTechnical Hewitt
The Nissan Cube is a really neat little car that is starting to turn heads wherever it goes due to its utilitarian cool styling and very reasonable sticker price.

The Cube would be a great car for many different uses and personal situations, but it really excels at just being itself. There is plenty of cargo room, and seats five comfortably. It yields really great gas mileage numbers in the city and on the highway. It makes an excellent car for young drivers as it is easy to operate and does not cost so much that a typical working teenager cannot afford it.

The "Base Model" four door wagon only costs around $13,990. This model comes with a six speed stick shift and a 1.8 Liter four cylinder engine that makes a snappy 122 horsepower, which is range of many other cars in the small compact class. It is also available with the ultra smooth running CVT (continuously variable transmission) that Nissan has perfectly matched to this car.

One of the most distinctive things you will notice about its styling is the way they wrapped the rear passenger corner window around the back of the car so that it looks more funky cool and retro than space age! This adaptation seems to me that it is trying to eliminate the blind spot you typically have on the passenger rear corner of the car. However, Nissan simply calls it an "Asymmetrical Look" and if you look closely during your test drive you will see that this wraparound shell is only a plastic covering attached over the glass.

There are a handful of other cars in it's class, with the Scion xB as the primary competitor followed closely by the Kia Soul, Honda Element, Kia Rio. Nissan Cube is competing very well in this small compact wagon market and is doing a great job of dividing some of the market share that once belonged to the Scion xB, and others.

One of the more popular things about these cars is the huge number of customizations that are available from the factory which are all designed so that the owner has maximum flexibility in designing their own Nissan Cube!
The most popular option is their LED interior accent lighting kit that comes with 20 colors that cycle through sequentially or you can adjust to one color choice with a selector knob. Admittedly many of the features available for this car are geared towards a young audience it does not mean that this Cube cannot be enjoyed by many other groups equally well.

Nissan seems almost proud of the fact that the boxy shape is reminiscent of a refrigerator, and in fact has made the rear door open in a way that strongly resembles said door. All things considered the overall design of this car is unique and very interesting. It is definitely one of those small and mighty wonders that you will really like once you give it a test drive!

One of the things i like the best is the storage bin that drops into the rear floor and is easily covered by folding down the rear seat. This seat is also cool in that it reclines in a way that makes it the preferred seating for going to the drive in theater! This happens to be a versatile 60/40 split, fold, sliding, reclining rear bench seat.

so to summarize what this little car can do for you I have to point out its versatility, and its adjustable personality which can be catered to your tastes. You can option this great little wagon to the nth degree with five models to choose from that cover the range of equipment and cost between $13,990 for the Base Model, up to around $20,440 for the 1.8 Liter S Krom edition.

Specifications were gleaned from a visit to a Nissan dealership, the 2010 Cleveland Auto show and the Nissan Cube website.

  • There are five Cube models to choose from and three of five use the CVT technology
  • CVT stands for Continuously Variable Transmission.
  • Cube has a very interesting window on the rear passenger corner.
Nissan Cube is competing in the compact wagon market and is going up against similar cars like the Kia Soul, Honda Element, Kia Rio, Scion xB, and others. The price of these is really good across the five models.
