Raw Wounds

(Dedicated to Justin and Trip)

L. Lee Scott
She has a friend
Who cuts herself --
Sharp new blades
Draw lines and crosshatches
In blood, on pale skin.

"Of course it hurts,"
Says the friend.
"The pain on the outside
Numbs the pain inside;
For a while I feel alive."

She holds her own new blade
Turning it in bright light,
Watching it flash, reflecting.
She brings it slowly to her arm
For just one, one time, one try

Blood flows bright red
She gasps at the sudden pain
Then gasps again
As the fragile stitches deep inside
Pull apart, one by one.

Obviously, I do too... and I believe it is truly intense inner pain. I've seen it most in survivors of severe abuse as children.

I know people who do cut themselves to decrease their inner pain. That pain must be so intense to use this alternative. Profound poem.
