Reaction to Rush Limbaugh's Speech, and What it Really Means

Anne Bryant
Rush Limbaugh made his first nationally broadcast speech this week. Being Rush, he spoke without pretense and articulated his views at length. He spoke to the guests about what the Republican Party was, and is, and he contrasted them with the Democratic party.

Rush was invited because he shares the views of most conservatives. He was invited because he has proven that he has something to say and people that want to listen to it. He has never tried to get into the good graces of the opposing party and he didn't try this time either. What he did, was to tell the truth as clearly as he could see it.

Immediately after the speech, the politicos went wild, as they often do when they feel that their special interests are attacked. Rahm Emanuel remarked that Limbaugh had clearly emerged as the leader of the Rebublican Party. Others attacked him for his supposed vitriol, while others followed the long standing Democratic Party proceedure of making fun of his appearance.

Rahm Emanuel was wrong. Rush Limbaugh is, and has long been, a strong voice for the Republican Party. As a radio talk show host he has had tremendous success. I know that there are those that will argue, but the numbers don't lie. Millions of people listen to him daily and have been doing it for years. Unlike Air America, he has kept the interest of his listeners and they are eager to hear what he will say next. The fact that he can be caustic makes him even more entertaining and often times makes his points clearer. All of this aside, what Rahm Emanuel did was brilliant. Mr Emanuel knows that Michael Steele was just made the chairman of the Republican Party, and that gave him a tremendous opportunity to make several intangible points. By proclaiming that Rush was "clearly the leader" of the Republican party, he minimized and insulted Steele. He implied that Steele was not capable of leading the Party. Michael Steele, who is a nice guy, took the bait and replied that Rush was an entertainer, but that he, Steele was the leader of the party. I don't blame him. I would have been insulted too, but Steele gave Emmanuel what he wanted. He took a shot at another Republican. Emanuel did not make his remark casually. He knew that he could create a rivalry and that is what he did. How hard is it to understand that if you can get your enemies to shoot each other, then you don't have to be bothered with them?Nice guy, Huh???

Others in the Democrtaic camp decried Rush's vitriol and meanness. I feel so sorry for them. It must be terrible to be so sensitive in such a troubled world. I hope it hasn't caused them severe emotional trauma. After all, Rush has been doing it for years. Did they just notice? Maybe so. I guess that it's a blessing that for now they have the choice of what they listen to and if he hurts their feelings so badly they can choose not to listen to him. They are smart enough to understand that, right? Don't we have liberals on this very site that keep telling us how intellectually superior they are? Maybe they are smart enough to go listen to what they consider to be good, and compassionate and politically correct. Do you think that maybe, while they are listening to those that they agree with, that they can put in a word about insulting someone for their appearance? In grade school we used to call people names and make fun of them. We would taunt fat kids or ugly kids, and then we grew up.

Rush said that he hoped Obama failed, and he meant it. I agree with him. I don't want our president to be successful in the most massive redistribution of income that has ever been undertaken. I don't want to pay for Harry Reids train or Thad Cochran's nature center. Republican or Democrat, it is not their money and they won't be paying for it, we will, and I don't want to. I guess I am just as mean as Rush, because I agree with every single point he made during his speech. I don't think he is the leader of the republican party, but I do believe that he is a talented and compelling speaker that is capable of making his points clearly. Rahm Emanuel thinks so too.

Excellent breakdown of this speech (I just caught the tail end myself). Though not a fan myself, I think he has Obama and his minions rightly called on their character and their motives!

I'm a little late in the game here, but I just wanted to say that I enjoyed your article. I caught the tail end of Rush's speech on the radio... now I have to see if I can find the whole thing. As far as those who are pushing for "unity", remember; unity is not necessarily a good thing. North Korea, for example, is a unified country, yet I doubt many of us would like to live there. I'll take the divisivness of the U.S., with it's range of choices, over the unity of North Korea any day, where you have none.

You are right, we should work together, but should we abandon our principles for the sake of unity? Republicans made many mistakes, and they were every bit as fiscally irresponsible as the Democrats. In America we throw money at our problems, and it never solves anything. Our politicians are so indebted to special interests (both parties) that they lose sight of the people that they are supposed to serve. I can apreciate your feelings about Limbaugh, but he is not the leader of the party. Rush Limbaugh is a very popular conservative talk show host. Those of us that agree with him listen to him,but he is not a requirement for anybody that chooses otherwise. Thanks again for your comment

Republicans do deserve somebody way better than Limbaugh is they are supposed to be the party of the people, because they haven't been for the longest time. Even though democrats are doing better, they still have a LONG way to go as well. Let's work together and stop the partisan nonsense. Thanks for your thoughts.

Does it really make sense though that Rush wants Obama to fail? This country is in an economic tailspin, and now all we want is for the new President to fail? What annoys me constantly about Rush is that he constantly espouses his ignorance of things and he does not take the time to listen to people objectively. Granted, I have a lot of problems with both Democrats and Republicans right now, but while Democrats certainly played a part in this economic fiasco, this all happened when the Republicans had most of the power. Instead of being the party of no, republicans need to look at the mistakes they have made just like the democrats need to. This is not a time for anyone to want our President to fail. Even if McCain were elected President, i wouldn't want him to fail either (I would expect him to, but to be proven wrong there wouldn't be such a bad thing). i appreciate your points, but the Republicans do deserve somebody way better than Limbaugh is they are supposed to be the party of t

Your conclusions about Emanuel were dead on. Despite all the rhetoric, some Dem pols, Emanuel & such, are exceptionally calculating. They were clearly trying to drive a wedge between Limbaugh, Steele and Conservatives. I didn't work, but kudos for trying.

What i find funny is how the White House felt they needed to respond to Rush. They definitely see him as political competition and that's a great thing.

Anne - Never read any of your articles before, but this was brilliant! I agree with you on every point here, especially talking about how sensitive (at least some) liberals are. GREAT PIECE!

Hmm, Kelly must have never worked beside the govies. If politicians had proven that they actually had our best interests in mind, maybe I'd feel as she does. Currently, I would much rather listen to a fat guy who understood my family's needs than anyone on Capitol Hill (excluding Ron Paul, of course). Excellent piece.

Thanks for your comment Sheryl. The saddest thing of all to me is that people can't see that they are being manipulated. During the election process they were deluged with mind deadening slogans like Change, change, hope, hope.. and it successfully kept them from questioning who they were voting for and what he stood for. Now they are being entertained by the war on Rush..instead of having the fiscal travesty that is going on explained and justified to them.. don't you just love diversion?
