I am not saying that humans cannot live without the word of God, because there are people who live a lifetime without reading one sentence. What I am saying is when we feed our spirits through the reading of His word, our lives begin to feel fuller, and we begin to not worry about issues that we otherwise might have. It also helps those of us with short temperaments become slower to wrath, and better at listening. The word of God is food to our inner beings.
Jesus tells us Himself, in Matthew 4:4, when He fasted in the wilderness for 40 days and became hungry that, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" That scripture was originally written in Deuteronomy 8:3, when Israel realized that their true basic source of life is God. Before age 19, I personally didn't really read the Bible at all. One day I made a decision that everyday, I will read something from it. Even if it was only one scripture, I decided that I wanted to get closer to God, and this is how I was going to do it. Like many people I didn't believe half of the stuff that was being preached in church, and wanted to see what God's word said myself.
Ever since I made that decision, my life has never been the same. I have been blessed beyond what I thought was possible for me. When I look back before that time, I realize that I would very easily fall into temptation and walked around with this emptiness that is unexplainable. Since then, I've developed a new sense of control over my own life, and haven't lost control since. At this present time, I do not attend church, and that is mostly because I feel that a lot of preachers preach there own opinions of the Bible, instead of teaching the message that God's word has for us. What we believers need, is some simple and understandable teachings, that are totally Bible based, like that of Dr. Creflo Dollar.
I want to encourage all people to read the Bible for themselves. There are hard hearted people in this world that will say that the Bible is all contradiction, but anyone who has truly read the scriptures wouldn't say such a thing. I haven't met one person, who has been consistent with the word of God, that hasn't been blessed tremendously. When you learn how God works, you stop believing in coincidences, and start knowing that it's His power at work.

Jesus said that if any man decided to do the will of God, he would see whether Jesus' words were true. God reveals Himself to the humble.
