Reading Through the Seasons

What to Read During Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall

Kate OLeary
What is the best season for reading books? This question is impossible to answer except to say that ALL seasons are the best for reading books and each season offers different gifts.

Winter. Reading in winter is fantastic. You can curl up in bed or by a fire with a cup of tea or a mug of hot chocolate with whip cream and the best quilt in the house and dive into books that are epic in nature. You can sit for hours on end reading and on occasion peaking out the window to see the tree's that are striped bare, maybe snow on the ground and you count your blessings that you are sitting inside where it is warm with a book that can transport you almost anywhere.

Spring. New life. The books that you read may become lighter in nature. Maybe you read a book of essays or short stories. You may sit inside with the window open feeling the breeze and smelling the earth waking up as you sit with a mug of herbal tea contemplating your plans for the summer. If the weather cooperates you may dust off the chair on the porch and perch there curled up with your book as you watch your toddler or puppy play.

Summer. There are few things in the world that are better then packing up your bag and your cooler and walking to the pool or the beach with six or seven books in your bag. During the summer months you also add a few trashy magazines and a big floppy hat. Some people decide that during their summer vacation they are going to conquer the classics Tolstoy or The Odyssey. Others decide that nothing is better then a quick easy read by Robert B. Parker or the current favorite Chick Lit author. Still others chose magazines. Summer and magazines go together. You can sit at the pool or the beach flipping through a magazine without having to spend a lot of time thinking about what you are reading. You look at pictures. Pick up a few tips on how to improve your relationship or make the best blueberry pie and then put on some more sunscreen. Remember to wear your hat. You want to stay healthy as there are so many books and so little time.

Fall. You move into fall. You may get a few extra days at the beach or the pool with your left over summer reading. You also have days where you can feel the chill in the air so you sit on the porch or by the window feeling the last warm rays of the sun as a pot of soup or stew simmers on the stove. Fall is the time to pick up new books. If you are a student you get ready for your semester. Going to the University bookstore and picking up your textbooks, cracking the spines and getting ready to learn and expand your horizons.

For those who love to read there is no best season all of the seasons are perfect. Each offering times and places to explore all of the worlds available through books.
