Chicago is a city of neighborhoods, many, many neighborhoods each one with a distinctive atmosphere and live style and there are literally thousands of properties for $200,000 and under. Most of them will be co ops and condos and with two bedrooms at the most. You can also find small two and three bedroom single family homes in some of the neighborhoods.
If you are not familiar with Chicago, you need to rely on a real estate agent. Make a list of what is most important to you in your price range and let them do the work. You will have to decide what is most important to you. The need to be near transportation, whether you need a unit with three small bedrooms or two large ones, sometimes a two bedroom unit can actually have more square footage than and three bedroom. Take a look at as many neighborhoods as you can with the agent and then go back on your own and walk around, visit the parks, stop in at the restaurants and shops. Check out all your options. Once you find the perfect place, you will be the first to know.
