Real Haunts in Utah for Halloween or Any Other Time

Steven Symes
Halloween is just around the corner. Not everyone gets into the spook alleys and corn mazes, or some are just looking for something different from the same old fare. For those looking to take a walk on the wild side, below is a list of more "real" paranormal attractions to provide some spice for the season.

Before I rattle off the list, I must provide a word of caution: many of these places are private property and trespassing is against the law. Make sure you get permission before entering anywhere that is not a public place.

In no particular order, here are the real things to do in Utah for Halloween:

1. Care to add some historical fright to the Halloween season? Check out This is the Place's Haunted Village going on now. Workers there claim ghosts of pioneers still walk the streets and play tricks in the various historic buildings. Located by the mouth of Emigration Canyon.

2. Go see for yourself a slice of Salt Lake City legend. Visit Lilly Gray's grave and see the final resting place of the Victim of the Beast. Some even claim they get an eerie feeling standing in that spot in the grave yard.

3. Take a tour of the haunted locations in Salt Lake City. Tours are given on a bus, with a professional storyteller. Visit www.storytours.com for more information or call 801-529-4497.

4. You cannot go inside, but just standing outside Old Mill is enough to send shivers up some peoples' spines. Some have called the now abandoned paper mill the most haunted site in all of Utah. More information here.

5. Stop by or take a tour of McCune Mansion, Salt Lake City's original haunted mansion. More information and pictures here.

6. Think your house is potentially haunted or know someone who does? Try recording some EVP's and see what you come up with.

7. Check out the Webster School, which was one of the first schools in Salt Lake City. The structure now sits abandoned, but that does not mean nothing is going on inside. Those who have visited it have reported seeing shadows of people not there and hearing inexplicable noises. The school is located at 9180 West and 2700 South in Magna.

8. Visit the Rio Grande Railroad Depot, where paranormal events have been reported since 1940. Located at 300 South Rio Grande Street in Salt Lake City.

9. Just about every cemetery in the State has ghost stories circulating about it. Check out one near you. Popular destinations, though, include cemeteries in Salt Lake City, Magna, Bountiful, and Provo.

10. For those in the southern part of the state, there is Old Main on SUU's campus. Reports of people being trapped in the elevators as well as a woman who walks the halls keep many out of the building after dark.
