Real ID CARD, National ID: Security or Nonsense?
The United States is about to issue a national ID card. In January 26, 2005 Rep. James Sensenbrenner introduced the Real Id Act which would require the establishment of an identity card with technological security standards. This identity card would store, at a minimum, your name, birthrate, gender, a photograph, address, and possible fingerprint or retinal scan. To get this card, you will have to prove that your SSN is what you had claimed to be. You have to prove your citizenship status and the DMV must verify all identity documents and digitize them and store them permanently.
In order for you to travel on an airplane, open a bank account, walk in a bar or perform anything that requires an ID or take advantage of any government service you will need this card. This card will basically replace your driver license or state ID. I am sure you are thinking that this is a good thing to keep us safe from terrorists and all that. Well, let us take a closer look.
The Real ID includes a "common machine-readable technology" which means that anywhere this card is scanned your information will be collected and stored. Anywhere you go, the information will be collected. The government will basically know where did you travel and when and why. The government will basically know anything you do with this identity card. Can you believe that? We will be constantly watched and there is nothing we can do about it. Where did the democracy go and our right to live freely? Aside from all that; what about the information on the card?
Let us assume that the government will not sell the information. What about the businesses? This information can be sold and resold to companies since they are not protected. If you are buying liquor and your ID need to be scanned than this store where you bought the liquor from will have this information. And what about identity theft? Do you not think that it will make it easier? Now anyone has this card can have your information.
But let us assume you think this is a good idea because now illegal citizens can not have a driver license and they can not collect welfare or anything that requires that ID. I do not think this would be an issue because this will just push them to drive without a driver license or without insurance which is not a benefit to anyone.
And can someone please explain to me why this is not in the media? Why no one has heard about this? Why is it all hush hush? And why there are no hearings or debates about this in congress? Why there are no committees with a panel of experts who can discuss this subject? Why are we being kept away from all this? Does this not involve us? Are we not the citizens of this country who will be affected by this? This feels more and more to be a totalitarian regime than a democracy.

Post a Comment3. Entering a nuclear facility. Baring those three, a REAL ID compliant card is not required. (Note, your boozing and banking are safe.) For people looking to board an airplane or enter a federal building, when REAL ID compliant cards are required for those purposes in 2017, you can always use another federal accepted ID, such as a passport.
As far as businesses collecting your information and using it as a marketing tool? Well, that's the price you pay for purchasing a product. Unless you're buying liquor, cigarettes or adult entertainment, that by law need to verify age, take it up with your local supermarket or video store as they are the collectors of your personal information. Just because a card's barcode is "read" does not mean the information is "captured". Even if it is, the information is captured by the store, not the federal government. If you have a problem with unsolicited coupons and half-off specials, take it up with corporate.
GM, when you say "let us assume that the government will not sell the information", I assume you mean a state government, specifically the Department of Motor Vehicles. Under the law, the federal government will have no more access to your personal information than before. A state Department of Motor Vehicles is bound by the Drivers Privacy Protection Act of 1994 (18 U.S.C § 2721) which prohibits the release of certain pieces of personal information from State motor vehicle records.
The REAL ID Act (Public Law 109-13) sets minimum standards for physical card security to prevent counterfeiting and processes to verify an applicant is who he/she says. A state Department of Motor Vehicles still collects, stores and protects license applicants' information and issues the driver's license or ID. In short, REAL ID is not a NATIONAL ID.

this isn't being told because first the media is controlled by the government and second our congress is not for the people anymore. They just want to make it easier to control us and make us think it is for our safety
