Real Life Beat Writers, Poets as Characters in Jack Kerouac Novels

David Christopher
The Beat writer Jack Kerouac's novels are well-known for being thinly disguised autobiographical works. Because of the popularity of what became known as the Beat Generation, Kerouac's novels serve not only as a precursor of the fictionalized memoir, but also as an invaluable part of a historic narrative. Kerouac himself planned to edit each novel into a coherent autobiographical narrative called the Duluoz Legend; sadly this was not completed before his death. For those who'd study any of the Beats, Kerouac is an invaluable reference. For any who'd obtain a better understanding of either the Beats, or the novels themselves, here is a list of the real Beat writers and poets on whom Kerouac's characters were based. This was compiled from the novels and Gerald Nicosia's Kerouac biography Memory Babe. The list is not comprehensive and focuses on major characters in the novels published during his lifetime, and of key members of the Beat Generation. (Other writers not associated with the Beats have also appeared in Kerouac's novels, such as William Gaddis and Gore Vidal, but they are not listed below.)

Very interesting, but then again, didn't all the modernists do this to a certain extent. Hemingway and Fitzgerald are prime examples. This Side of Paradise is for sure semi-autobiographical. The Sun Also Rises and even For Whom the Bell Tolls are also based on experiences not to mention a large chunk of Hemingway's short fiction. Great list though, thanks for posting!
