Well, isn't this innovative... perhaps they're acquainted with the digital horse flogger known as Twitter. In the latest issue of Real Simple, there's a whole spread on the internet, internet etiquette, social media do's and don'ts and what have you. It's nothing we don't already know...I happen to break about 98% of those rules, but I do it on purpose. The scary thing is the people that aren't doing it on purpose. That's just the way they are.
So they decided to go a bit further than the story and start "National Be Nice On the Internet Week" which will explore the psychological issues of things like cyberbullying and trolls. You know...think before you post and all that jazz. Take a week off from calling people assholes, antagonizing for fun...just being positive.
If you want to take the pledge you can click here.
And remember it's the internet, and as with all things, only you control how much people can hurt you, and what effects you. There're these great innovations called block buttons, delete, and wait for it... turning off the computer. Yes, we're human and there's been twice in my 15 year history on the innertubes that I've been really upset by online nonsense and drama. But remember, if you went up to someone on the street and tried to explain anything that happens in a chat, blog, Twitter, Facebook, etc. they would look at you like you had three heads and tell you to keep taking your meds.
Silence speaks a thousand words and ignoring goes a long way.
But most importantly, be nice. There's really no point in getting butt-hurt over anything an avatar has to say to or about you. I love this thing Real Simple is doing and I hope a lot of people take the pledge.
