Reasonable Expectations to Have When Opening an Online Store or Business

What to Expect When You Open an Online Store or Business

Mary Lake
Almost everyone at one time or another wants to own their own business. The Internet offers a fairly inexpensive way for anyone to become a business owner of any type of store they can imagine. Let's say you've selected your niche market, you have created your web site, have it hosted on a domain, and it is now ready to open. The big question is what should you expect?

Your web site will not be an overnight success
The chances of your web site being an overnight success are slim to none. Anyone would like their online store to be an overnight success but realistically the odds are against you. Getting your online business up and running is a long, hard process. Chances are your niche market is not unique and you will be competing with people all over the world selling products in the same niche market. Also, it takes time for the search engines to find you an index you so other people can find you when searching for the topic of your niche market. If you are willing to work hard, chances are your online store or business will eventually be a success - it's just not going to happen right away.

Online stores and businesses are a lot of work
It would be wonderful if of you could just jump on your computer for 10 or 15 minutes a day and have a successful web site for your online store for business. But realistically not putting work into your online store business will eventually lead to its failure. Any online store or business has potential - but you have to put in the work to reach its potential. Once the store you created is running, you have to put in hours of work submitting your site to search engines, marketing, and networking.

You will not have an immediate income
When I opened my first online store it was days before I even had one visitor to the site never mind a buyer for my products. You might have a sale once in awhile but chances are this will not happen until about six months into your project. Opening an online store or business is a gradual process - you just have to be patient and wait for the results - they eventually will come.

You will not be able to replace your full-time job
Almost anyone would love the option to quit their jobs and sit at home at the computer and have the money roll in. This is an unrealistic expectation. You must accept the possibility that your online store will bring you income, just not what you expect or want. If you are lucky enough to have a web site that is successful enough to replace your full-time job remember that your web site is still a full-time job. No web site can be self-sustaining without active work.

Treat your online store or business as if it was your job
Any successful online store or business owner will tell you that the work you put into your web site is equivalent to a normal job - and sometimes can be even harder. It takes hours and hours of free work to convert to a successful sale and eventually online store or business.

Be ready to work for free
You will dedicate hours, days, weeks, and months of unpaid time before you have any sort of payoff. In my situation, I worked at least an hour day for five months before I made my first four dollars. Essentially, I was working for free and I admit this is not the best feeling in the world. But once you get your first sale, it will give you the motivation to keep going. Six months later, I am able to pay for a least one or two bills with my online income. It may not be much - but it's a start. If you are not willing to put in a lot of time working for free opening an online store or business may not be for you.

Remember, if you already have an online store or business and it doesn't seem to be living up to your expectations give it time. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication in order to make an online store or business work. If you are willing to put it in the effort, your web site will eventually be a success.
